AnteaV,

AnteaV, And I thought about depression, which in this case, it is unlikely he would become drunk alone.

If read my story, you would understand Illya drinks alone.

archiveofourown.org/works/2563967/chapters/5701...

I always have a bottle or two of vodka. Most of my siblings and friends keep it as well. I make bloody Mary's with it. Add tomato juice and hot sauce, it was a very acceptable to drink vodka in the United States in the 60's. I remember my parents kept a bottle for my Russian uncle. They would drink it with him when he visited. It was my uncle's favorite drink.

Perhaps in UNCLE, Illya drinks vodka because it reminds him of his homeland. He's often nostalgic though he seldom speaks of this. In one story, he shops in "Little Russia," an area in New York Citty where Russian immigrants settled, and buy shampoo, soap and other items that were imported from Russia.

This post is dedicated to Illya and vodka)) It’s always awkward to talk about Russians and vodka. Russians don’t drink vodka as much as we always see it in foreign films and books. For example none of my acquaintance even likes vodka. It’s strange to like vodka when you have free excess to any other tasty alcoholic drink. Of cause we have alcoholics here, but all countries have them.
Russians drink vodka in several occasions:
1) Someone died (100 g to remember the dead);
2) Someone got very cold. In that occasion it’s wiser not to take 100 g inside (but you still can do it to warm yourself if you’re already in warm place). Usually we rub frozen parts of the body with vodka, foots for example not to get cold. In the case of some emotional shock someone can offer you to drink glass of vodka at stretch just to calm down and clear your mind. You can use vodka as antiseptic if you have wound and don’t have any other antiseptics;
3) To celebrate some momentous event (advance in rank, for example, or child birth).

But still vodka was not respectful drink. Poor people drank vodka, cuz it was rather cheap drink compare to others. For example, the cheapest cognac was three times more expensive than vodka. Vodka was bought for big celebrations when many guests were invited, and it was expensive to buy wine for everybody. Common workpeople drank beer after work more frequently than vodka. Wine was for holidays. People in villages made samogon (alky). Some Soviet man from good (probably intellectual) family who was sent to work abroad wouldn’t drink vodka with preference over other drinks. Especially if he have big chose in drinks. Suppose Illya is feeling very dull and depressed. Of cause he can drink vodka, but much more likely it would be cognac, or brandy, or wisky. If he’s nostalgic about his Motherland, well, maybe it’ll be vodka. Still we don’t think that he drank vodka back in the USSR, so why should he drink it to remember his country? So there are two most probable situations, when he will drink vodka – 1) someone died and he’s very upset; 2) he got advance in rank/was medaled and he drinks vodka in order to celebrate it.
Funny thing is that sometimes when you’re abroad it is easier to drink vodka than to explain why you, Russian person, don’t drink it )))
It is important to remember that vodka is drunk at stretch. That’s why we use that 100 g glass (shot glass). You drink it all at stretch and take snack at once. We don’t savor vodka. It’s not cognac to savor it. Actually it’s rather unpleasant drink which can burn your mouth if you keep it there for too long. We don’t put ice in vodka too, but it’s better to drink it cooled.
We heard that in the USA in 1960s vodka was considered as lady’s drink. If it’s true, in the USSR it’s quite an opposite – vodka was very masculine drink. It’s even obscene for woman to drink vodka.
It’s interesting that in canon Illya drank nothing stronger than wine (once it was slivovitsa though).
12.11.2015 в 22:56

BrooklynHere's to explain to people that the competent Russian ever starting with vodka would not go to lowering degree and then drink beer or wine.

Ah, but he is becoming Americanized. He keeps with Russian ways but likes to indulge in what he sees others doing. Napoleon, for example drinks too much Scotch, but other times beer or vodka.More fanon: Illya enjoys long, hot showers which he could not have in Russia with communal living arrangements. He orders food to be delivered to his apartment, which he does not share with anyone. He indulges in Chinese food, and eats it with chopsticks (a bit of canon here).

lindafishes8, is it ok in the USA to drink beer after vodka?)) To low the degree?
12.11.2015 в 23:43

InpuWe heard that in the USA in 1960s vodka was considered as lady's drink.

A "Harvey Wallbanger" is a vodka drink of the 1960's for men and women. Vodka gomlets were another favorite. "Black Russian" with Kahlua and vodka is my personal favorite. "White Russian" with cream, Kahlua and vodka was more of a lady's drink. Too rich for me though. There's a "Screwdriver," made with vodka and orange juice. Yum! All of these vodka drinks were from the 1960's. There were very popular as women and men dranks them. If you were a "real" man, you drank vodka straight. I'm glad you've posted how vodka is drunk in Russia.

Have you shared what you posted today with LJ? To help writers understand vodka etiquette in Russia?
12.11.2015 в 23:50

Inpu lindafishes8, is it ok in the USA to drink beer after vodka?

It's considered bad to mix drinks. If you start out with a liquor, you should stay with it and not switch to beer or another liquor except brandy perhaps, after a meal. It is considered wrong to switch from wine to liquor, unless there is a fair amount of time between the two.
12.11.2015 в 23:55

lindafishes8, oh! Didn't know that. If we invite guests to our appartment for example, we put several bottles of different drinks. Red wine, white wine, maybe champagne, then cognac, maybe vodka )))) And liquor as a dessert)) With tea and sweets and cakes))

I will post this to LJ in an hour or so.

13.11.2015 в 00:21

InpuSo vodka based cocktails were popular, not pure vodka itself?

Yes, pure vodka, we call them "shots" were popular also, but for men, in general. I see writer's in LJ have Illya drink out of a glass when in public, but straight out of the bottle when alone and emotionally upset. You must consider, this is fanon and Illya did drink vodka when he was in Russia because it was cheaper than other forms of alcohol. Again, it is fanon. Readers here want to see certain familiar things appear in MFU stories. They watch for them, it makes them comfortable. Canon, of course, but also fanon. If they are not in the story, readers won't accept the story as authentic and you loose readership. I have mentioned many things already.

I plan on using facts about drinking I've read here in my stories. Question: If Illya wanted to get Russian moonshine in the US, where might he get it? He would not make it himself, and he's a loner in his down time, with few friends outside of UNCLE.(more fanon) I want to work this into a new fic.

Off topic -I want to share something about me. I have a Russian tea glass which I use. Supposed to be used by men only as I understand but that won't stop me. Women in Russia use only china or other cups, from what I under stand? I also have a fic I am working on where Illya has a romantic encounter with a women he meets in a second hand shop. She asks him what kind of glass she found and Illya explains about the tea glass.

NikaDimm,Since we are talking about etiquette vodka, can write, as they wash the stars?

Wash the stars? Does this mean to make a toast? Example- "I wish you health and happiness in your marriage," and then everyone takes a drink?
13.11.2015 в 00:43

Benedict in love have this question tormented the whole fic.

The Arctic Circle is not a street. The Arctic Circle is one of the five major circles of latitude that mark maps of the Earth. As of 20 October 2015, it runs 66°33′45.9″ north of the Equator.

The region north of this circle is known as the Arctic, and the zone just to the south is called the Northern Temperate Zone. The equivalent polar circle in the Southern Hemisphere is called the Antarctic Circle.Parts of Russia, Canada ans Alaska are in it. The North pole in in it's center. Very cold there, even in summer.
13.11.2015 в 00:44

If you read this line remember not the hand that writ it
lindafishes8,

Washing the stars (or medal) means celebrating the new rank or the new award. Officer puts stars or medal into the glass, fills the glass with vodka (that's nearly 200 grams) and drinks full glass in one shot. And then he says his new rank and surname and all other officers congratulate him. I don't know if there is a similar tradition for women officers but for men it's a whole ritual fervently observed. If for some reason an officer can't do it immediately he will wear old uniform (one for previous rank) until he has an opportunity to wash his stars. Only after that he puts new stars on his uniform.

As for glasses or china - crystall wineglasses are very popular in Russia, often family has a set of several types all in one design, 6 of each type.
13.11.2015 в 00:54

NikaDimm,

Thanks for explaining. Washing the Stars.

What we call "Russian Tea Glasses" are what Russian men drink hot tea out of. Not wine. A drinking glass is placed inside a metal (pewter ,silver or copper) holder that has a handle. This is what I was talking about.

Your translation is not accurate )) Benedict is not asking if Arctic Circle is a street. We know Arctic Circle, some of us live there )) it was a discussion of fanfic in which Illya was working in the North and kept vodka outside, "in the street" (Russian idiom for outside). Vodka got frozen. Benedict said the question "why is he keeping vodka where it gets frozen?" was tormenting

Now I am embarrassed. :bang: You must explain to your ignorant American cousin again and again. "in the street" means outside.

I know the story. It is part of Uncle Charlie's "Going Postal" series.

Fancy tea glassed sound nicer. I will replace mine with a better crystal glass.
